Industry Standard e57 Data

4As the terrestrial LiDAR industry continues to mature and grow, new software applications for cloud to cloud registration and model generation are introduced on a regular basis.   3D at Depth is committed to providing industry standard data formats to allow our user base a wide range of application options. With the latest release of the 3D Cloud software, 3D at Depth offers full e57 support as a data output type.  The e57 data format offers several enhancements that greatly improve processing quality, reduces time and provides additional QC capabilities. 3DCollect ASTM Committee e57 was formed in 2006 to address interoperability issues for 3D imaging systems.   One of the results from the committee was the development of the ASTM E57 File Format for 3D Imaging Data Exchange (known as E57).  The E57 format supports gridded data (i.e., data aligned in regular arrays), multiple coordinate systems (including Cartesian and spherical), embedded images from cameras, built in error detection, and groupings of points into rows, columns, or user-defined groups. The E57 format also defines an extension mechanism that allows users to develop custom capabilities that were not envisioned in the initial design of the standard. These extensions could be integrated into future versions of the standard. Finally, the E57 format has an essentially unlimited file size and number of records (1.8E19 bytes in length), whereas the LAS format is limited to 4.2E9 records.” For a list of e57 supported products including those from 3D at Depth, click here e57 Scan Position The 3D at Depth e57 implementation has been proven with leading point cloud processing software including Leica’s Cyclone.  In this picture, a subsea laser scan of subsea structures was output into e57 format and rendered using Leica Cyclone.
