Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
As the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for 3D at Depth, Ian Roberts leads the professional engineering and design team that provides technical expertise and best practices for the development, design and build of custom engineering projects for subsea and marine customers worldwide. Roberts’s career spans over 25 years in the offshore Oil and Gas industry, primarily in the ROV and cable burial sectors where his focus was mechanical and hydraulic subsea engineering. His record of providing creative solutions to ROV and tooling requirements includes a wide variety of scopes from small project specific tools to large projects for major contractors.
Before coming to 3D at Depth, Ian worked at Tidewater Subsea supporting ROV operations and tooling design, and assisted in vessel installation and integration of ROV systems. Along with his engineering work, Roberts also implemented Tidewater’s company document control systems in preparation for ISO 9000/14000 certification.
While at Sonsub Houston (later Saipem America), Roberts was the mechanical lead on tooling projects including pipeline repair systems and headed mechanical/hydraulic engineering of the Company's in- house Innovator ROV build program. Prior to his engagement with Saipan American, Roberts career spanned a wide range of applications including engineering OEM ROV and cable burial systems for both independent ROV manufacturers and providing in house remote systems solutions for major contractors. As part of the CSO Offshore Engineering Department he provided Remote System related engineering support to all CSO regions, before being transferred to Perry Tritech (Jupiter Florida) to leverage his ROV experience, primarily in support of engineering Cable Burial ROV’s and cable Ploughs.
After graduating from university, Roberts secured a position at Sonsub Ltd providing support for ROV operations, engineering in house tooling and supporting tooling projects for Sonsub owner Saipem. Prior to graduating from University of Huddersfield Roberts worked as a paid intern at Slingsby Engineering Ltd, a UK independent supplier of ROV and Cable Burial systems
Robert’s has a. Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Design from the University of Huddersfield.
